Exhaust fans and vent covers
These are the items that tell an inspector whether the unit was cleaned by someone who has done it before.
Bathroom fan covers pull down against spring clips and wash in the sink. Range hood filters slide out and degrease in hot soapy water. Return-air vents unscrew and rinse. All three are checked.
Bathroom fan cover
Pull straight down. It moves about an inch and then hangs on two wire clips you squeeze together. Wash in the sink, dry fully, and clip it back. If the fan housing behind it is dusty, vacuum it.
Range hood filter
The metal mesh slides or hinges out. Hot water, dish soap, and a soak. If it is a charcoal filter rather than mesh it is a replaceable part, and a new one is a couple of pounds well spent.
Return-air vents
Usually two screws. The back face carries a dust mat you cannot see from the room. Wipe both faces and vacuum into the opening.
